Saturday, May 8th. My neighborhood is having a yard sale.
Inspired by Hemmingway's six-word story "For sale: baby shoes. Never worn." And a fellow bereaved mother's List of Reasons her healthy, full term baby girl may have died.
Things we could sell at 6726:
Baby shoes. Never worn.
Complete newborn to 18 month girl's onesie set. Various prints and solids. Brand new, some still with tags. Other clothing items available, all sizes up to 3T, mostly girls, some neutral.
White crib, assembled, unused, cleaned and sanitized, with a brand new, unused crib bedding set (display only), and clean sheets (3 sets).
Diapers, wipes, towels, bubble bath, diaper cream, baby lotion. All unopened.
Strollers for each terrain (3), unused, assembled. Matching car seat and play-yard. Swing, 2 bouncy vibrating chairs, bouncer for a doorway opening, baby play gym and exersaucer. The bouncer is pink, all the rest neutral and unused. The exersaucer is 2nd-hand, the only used item on our lot. Purchased "like new" on craig's list. Needs a good cleaning.
Recliner: lays mostly flat. Not responsible blaming feelings for future death of baby in utero if you chose to sleep on your back on it. You've been warned. Guilt, no extra charge.
A heartbreaking story. Tissues included.
Bitching and moaning about feeling sorry for ourselves: Free.
Hugs, tears, a listening ear, my couch at midnight, my phone number, my blog address. Free for the babylost.
Name your price. Approximate value: 730 trillion dollars.
For trade:
Uterus. If you're done with yours, it has always worked, and still does, taking applications. Sales final. Will require legally binding contract. Not responsible if you get pregnant, with my uterus, after trade.
Seeking:
Children. Preferably babies. Open to any health status, gender, and race. Sales final. Will require legally binding contract.
My smile. Seem to have misplaced it.
Courage. People keep telling me I have it, but I don't see it.
Previously purchased, seeking refund:
Prayers. Don't seem to be working.
Hope.
Not interested in:
Your presumptions about what God wanted for my family's life. Please, no thank you.
Not for sale:
My baby's photographs. May borrow. Will maim if you don't return in proper condition.
Fantastic, supportive husband.
