black and white

i cant write poetry. there have been many times when i will sit down and try, but it just doesnt work.

it seems though, about once a year, something will come to me. it seems to be near the anniversary of my father's death, when i do a lot of deep thinking and changing. here's my latest. this was, unfortunately, written about 1am on a night before clinical when i was still in school, when i had get up at 5:30. of course, the poems come at in-oppurtune times. i think i was driving when last years poem, called "where you are", came to me.

Black and White is Clear

by Elizabeth Barnard Davis

April 27, 2008

The first moment

that changed my life

I wore a pink so soft

it appeared white.

In the arms of my mother

the gleam of my father's eye

I was baptized to know Christ.

A later moment

that changed my life

I wore white.

The cheers of my family heard

as I finished my high school flight.

The next moment

that changed my life

I wore black.

And spoke of a father

who took a piece of each of our hearts

when his failed him.

All moments from then on

have not been what we expected.

There is a moment

that changed my life

I wore white.

Amongst a crowd of my loved ones

I married my sweet

dressed in black.

A promise, a person to share moments with.

As I approach my next defining moment,

I will wear a black cap and gown,

I see these changes in my life,

though in black and white..

What is meaningful to me

is perfectly clear.
